The Kanu Heart Foundation (KHF) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization founded by world-renowned footballer Nwankwo Kanu after undergoing major heart surgery in 1999. Driven by a passion to give back, he established KHF to provide life-saving treatment for underprivileged African children and young adults suffering from heart conditions.
Since its launch in 2000, the foundation has successfully facilitated over 542 open-heart surgeries for children across Nigeria and other African countries, working with leading hospitals in England, Israel, India, and Nigeria. The journey began in London, where the first two beneficiaries underwent successful surgeries. As the demand grew, KHF expanded its partnerships, first with the Save-a-Child Heart organization in Israel, and later with hospitals in India, where high-quality cardiac care was more cost-effective.
Recognizing the need for sustainable, local solutions, KHF has also pioneered bringing international cardiac experts to Nigeria to perform surgeries. In 2003, a historic collaboration with the International Children’s Heart Foundation saw 13 surgeries conducted at University Teaching Hospital, Enugu, proving that with the right resources and infrastructure, these life-saving procedures can be performed in Africa.
Beyond heart surgeries, KHF is committed to tackling homelessness in Africa and has supported the construction of five hospitals to ensure ongoing care for children with undiagnosed heart diseases. The foundation continuously seeks support, fundraising opportunities, and awareness campaigns to save more lives.
Together, we can give hope and a future to children in need.
We believe that every heartbeat matters, and no child should suffer or die from a treatable heart condition. Through continued fundraising efforts like the Kanu Cup Charity Fundraiser and partnerships with organizations worldwide, we aim to expand our reach and transform Africa into a hub for affordable and high-quality cardiac care.
Saving one heart at a time. Our Goal is to build cardiac centres Across Africa starting from Nigeria where there will be access to heart screens and education. Until then, we will keep organising operations to the children on our waiting list.
